- Choose whether the deck is attached or freestanding. An attached deck uses a house ledger in the model. A freestanding layout adds rear support posts and girders instead.
- Select the decking and direction. Choose 5/4 pressure-treated decking, 2×6 pressure-treated decking or composite. The 2×6 selection changes the displayed joist layout to 24 inches on center; the other selections use 16 inches on center.
- Add platforms and stairs. Use added platforms for landings, extensions or changes in elevation. Place stairs on the correct deck face and select where the bottom lands.
- Adjust corners and railings. Add cut corners where needed and compare wood, composite, aluminum, cable and glass railing styles. Structural 6×6 perimeter posts also serve as guard posts where the layout permits.
- Review the framing view. Check joist direction, flush girders, post spacing, footing sizes, the house ledger and stair stringers. The drawing set labels standard and heavy footings.

Deck framing and railing details
The model uses flush girders, 2×12 rim boards and 6×6 structural posts. Perimeter posts are notched 1½ inches for the outside rim, and corner posts are notched on two adjoining sides. Those posts continue above the deck as strong guard and handrail posts. Post bays are kept at seven feet or less, while the framing layout targets joist spans of no more than fourteen feet. Framing stock is limited to sixteen-foot lengths except for posts, with splices intended to occur over bearing. These are planning assumptions and must still be checked against the actual site, lumber species and grade, connector requirements, loads and local code.
